Clap your hands for Basti! (and learn about surfers nutrition)

Great news for the upcoming surfcoaching trip ´Irish Infusión´: professional chef Basti Peters is once more joining the NOMB Surf adventures! Last year Basti already spoiled the NOMB surfers with his healthy powerfood, giving them enough energy to brave the cold Irish waters. Basti has just confirmed his participation in just another epic surftrip. This is what breakfast looked like last year.. hmmh.. jummy!!

Since the trip to Ireland in November last year Basti has dedicated himself to find the perfect mix of vegetarian and meat based cuisine for extrem sports people, like the NOMB Surfers. A perfect nutrition for extreme athlets like surfers contains 5 meals a day: a powerful breakfast, a lunch full of proteins and a healthy dinner that refills all your batteries, plus two snacks in between.

Breakfast should be full of fast carbonhydrates such as oats, dried fruits and natural sugars. This mix will kickstart your body after sleeping and get you ready for the first surfsession. A great snack just before, or after a long surfsession, is a handfull of dried fruits, maybe a mix of almonds and raisins. That way you are providing your body with fast and slow carbonhydrates, ideal before a surf sesssion and even better after to restore the used muscles.

Lunch is often overlooked, while this is the meal that keeps our body going throughout the day. A lunch packed with proteins (both animal or vegetable proteins will do) and fast carbonhydrates will make sure that your engines keep running. As everyone has their very own preference for lunch we leave this meal up to our surfers to decide. Some prefer to cook, others prefer to check out one of the Little irish coffee places. We do daily supermarket stops so our participants can stock up on supplies if needed.

A family style dinner rounds up an epic day full of surfing and discoveries. Dinner can vary, sometimes containing only veggies and meat, sometimes also fast carbonhydrates such as pasta or rice. The importance of a balanced sport diet is to follow a varied died. Never give your body the chance to get used to the same menu. Challenge your  body by changing the rhythm of fast and slow carbonhydrates, not giving him any time to adopt and start getting ´lazy´in absorbing the food´s energy. If you wanna learn more about how to fuel and prepare your body for the demanding hours of surfing check out the book ´Body fuel´ by Mark Watson.

We are delighted that Basti will join us on the ´Irish Infusion 2017´ and can´t wait to dig into his delicious food. One of the great things about a NOMB Surfcoaching trip is that even though we are like a mobile surfschool, we still provide our guests with everything you can dream of in a surfcamp. With the extra bonus that our locations change, so you won´t ever get bored of surfing with a NOMB Surf adventure.

Apart from the NOMB Surftrip ´Irish Infusioon´in 2017 we will also run ´Lanzarote Legacy´and ´Charging Chile´ in 2018. And always keep an eye on our website for more trips to be announced 😉

Any questions or enquiries, get in touch and we will find the perfect surftrip for you!

#Tripnotes Ireland 2016: a lot of craic…

#Tripnotes Ireland 2016: a lot of craic…

… and a lot of waves!!! … and a lot of fun!! And so much more!!

Doro, one of our NOMB Surfers, summs up the Ireland Surftrip : epic waves, amazing group, it’s been like a dream!

But let´ s sart at the beginning. The NOMB Surfteam met up in Dublin, Irelands crazy capitol city (and it really is crazy on Halloween Weekend) the night before the trip. It was a fun night but everyone was glad to leave early the next morning for the quiteness & calm of Irelands North-West Coast. Reaching James Palace (with direct view at Killer Point), our home for the next week, it was clear to everyone that we had arrived in our little surf  paradise.

View from James Palace

Taking advantage of the great conditions the NOMB Surfteam (Thomas, Kiki, Tobi, Susann, Doro, our chef Basti and surfcoach Angie ) straight away hooked up with Lee (aka. Good Old Lee or the Lee-gend) from Narosa Surfschool (highly recommended!!) who would be guiding us around this beautiful part of our planet. After everyone was kitted out with surfboards, 5.4mm wetsuits, gloves, beanies and other warm protection gear, our keen surfers hit the water. Every day Lee picked out the best spots & conditions for our Surfteam and took us to some crazy and hidden beaches. Surfcoach Angie coached in and out of the water while Lee made sure everyone was safe in the water and sitting at the right spot! Great teamwork!

The weather conditions changed over the week, being in Ireland that had to be expected. And Ireland showed off with everything it has on offer: sunshine, wind, sunshine, rain, sunshine, rainbows, sunshine, double rainbows, sunshine, hail.. But nothing could stop the NOMB Surfers!! With smiles on their faces they braved everything that mother nature threw at them.. From perfect glassy & clean conditions, to windy & freezing cold windswell! Legends! Even though we surfed several different beaches, our homespot Marbel Hill was everyones favourite. You wonder why?

When the conditions turned a bit too gnarly to surf the team enjoyed a layday. Well deserved after the double surf session the day before. Yoga lessons with lovely Sam made sure that the team stayed streched & flexible. Sam also worked on the right breathing techniques, something important that´s often overlooked in surfing. With relaxed bodies the team set off to relax their minds and discover a bit of the breathtaking countryside surrounding us. Horns Head, one of County Donegals most rugged and untouched pieces of coastline offered some incredible views.

Giggles in the morning! Laughters all day long! Surf theory! Video analysis! Surf! Surf! Surf! Shopping! A lot of tea!

Cold water, wild waves and a great&brave team!

5 keen surfers, 1 keen chef and 1 keen surfcoach! Meet the NOMB Ireland Surfteam!

After a bit of a freaky night in Dublin (Halloween is big over here) the team reached its home away from home: Dunfanaphy! Aka the D-place! And jumped into the cold & wild Irish waters for the first time!

Our brave team was rewarded by amazing woodfireoven pizzas in the crazy and cosy Rusty Oven, and a sneaky whiskey in front of the fireplace in our home ‘James Palace’.

Meet the team: Basti

Meet the team: Basti

Hi. My name is Basti.

I am the one to get along with on your NOMB Surftrip to Ireland. Why? The answer is easy: I’m responsible for your food 🙂

Basti

After spending some years (too many) at university I decided to become a chef. Coming from the dry land around Essen, Germany my love for the ocean took me to the isle of Sylt for nine years. Two xears ago I realized that older people need a warmer climate. so I packed my stuff and moved to Fuerteventura. Ireland will be my first trip back to cold water. Brrrrrrrrr!!!

Be nice to me and you won’t go to bed hungry.

See you in Ireland. Basti

P.s.  I promise to find the best local pub for you!!

Let´s surf Ireland!!
