New Trip: GHANARAMA, September 2019!

New Trip: GHANARAMA, September 2019!

Surftripping to Ghana, a real adventure

Great news, it´s time for another NOMB Surf Adventure Surftrip! Woohoo! This time it will take the surfteam to Ghana, a beautiful country on the westcoast of Africa.

Why Ghana you ask? Well, we here at NOMB Surf are always looking for off the beaten track destinations. That´s one of the things that makes surftripping with us so special. Our destinations are generally not known for surfing, and definately not at the time of the year we visit. Who really considers Ireland as a surfdestination, in November 😉

But back to Ghana. One day NOMB Surfer Annette told headcoach Angie about her work she was doing in Ghana. And mentioned about her surfexperience down there. Let two travelling minds come together and the idea of GHANARAMA was born: surftripping along the westcoast of Ghana.

Unlike on the past adventure surftrips, in Ghana the surfteam will have a homebase, an amazing eco-lodge right at the end of a beautiful beach. Starting from there the team will not only surf the waves in front of their door but also head out to explore the amazing (point) breaks that Ghana´s coast has to offer. Guided by a local surfguide who always makes sure that the team is a the right time at the right place. Two weeks of surfing without big crowds in warm (24degrees) waters, what more can you really want?? Here is Annette with her local surfguide just before jumping into the warm atlantic waters.

Ghana as a travelling destination can be a bit of a challenge, especially for not too experienced travellers. There are a few things that you have to have in mind before booking your flight ticket:

  • apart from the standart vaccinations you will need a yellowfever vaccination
  • you will need to apply for your tourist visa at the nearest Ghana embassy /consulate
  • you will, if travelling to the coast, need malaria prophylaxis
  • you need to be prepared to step out of your comfortzone and into a totally new culture

To some of you it might sound like the usual preparation before heading out into the world, some of you might find themselves overwhelmed. Either way, the reward for stepping out of your world and into another culture is always mindblowing. And not only talking about surfing new waves but also talking about experiencing new customs, new languages, new smells, new foods, new colors, new music, new friends.. The list is endless.

NOMB Surf´s adventure surftrips are designed for giving you the chance to experience all of the above while having the security of an organized trip. Sure, you will have to take care of your travel arrangements to get to Accra, Ghana´s capitol. But the rest is organized for you: transport, accomomodation, surfcoaching, food, surf equipment, yoga etc.

Daily surfcoaching (in English, German or Spanish) will make sure that your surflevel will boost up a level or two. NOMB Surfcoaching is different from the general teaching you find in a surfschool or surfcamp. Headcoach Angie works with direct (i.e. direct feedback or tips in the water) and indirect (i.e. video analysis or drills) coaching techniques. Qualitiy and effective surfcoaching is what makes NOMB Surf special. Goal setting, self- and surfawareness, theory and so much more..

We here at NOMB Surf are totally excited and stoked about this once in a lifetime trip. If you want to join us on this crazy surfadventure get in touch now and secure your surfspots. We are only taking 6 surfers down there, only 4 spots are still available, and yeahh, there are booking up really fast.

Great waves and a breathtaking view while surfing on Tenerife

.. what a surfholiday!! Great waves and uncrowded lineups in breathtaking surroundings.

Did you know that the Canary Island of Tenerife is practically one big volcano?? The Teide, with over 3.600m, is the highest peak of Spain. It´s top is often covered by clouds but it´s walls basically coneshape the island. It doesn´t get much better than surf great waves and be surrounded by stunning countryside and beaches, does it?? NOMB Surfer Michi was clearly frothing over the incredible lush cliffs around.

But let´s begin with telling you a little bit more about TENERIFE TAKE-OFF. The NOMB Surf headquarters on Tenerife were located right up on the hill, underneath the Teide, in nearly 1.000m altitude. A beautiful oceanview included of coures. The crew was lucky, it was nearly all private rooms this trip, each room equipped with a private bathroom. TENERIFE TAKE-OFF also saw the first ever surfing couple on a NOMB Surftrip: A.K. and Michi! It worked out great for everyone, we hope to welcome more fun couples like this one in the future!

Being located so high up, sure, it was a little bit chilly at the house but the lush garden of our rural homestay, the woodfire oven, the pool and the sauna (in daily use) made up for the little chill outside. Check out our pool!!

Trying to learn how to duckdive didnt really work out in the freezing water of the pool

What you don´t know is that we lasted only about 2min in the pool 😉 The water was freeeeezing. Surfheadcoach Angie and NOMB Surfer Chris wanted to take advantage of the pool and do some duckdive training. They got changed into their wetsuits, got the boards ready and ufffff, so freezing cold. Duckdive training was called off but the pool fun continued.

The not too sucessfull practical duckdive trainig was part of the daily surftheory sessions. Either after breakfast, before heading to the beach or snuggeled up next to the fireplace at the end of the day. Our NOMB Surfers learned a lot about ocean awareness, the beach environment, the formation of swell and waves. They also learned how to correct themselves through photo and video analysis. A strong and great tool to improve. Often our perception of what we are doing is totally different from reality.

Our surftrips are designed for our participants to improve quickly and efficient. Theoretical and mental training out of the water are as important as the correction of chains of movements and direct coaching in the water. Always depending on the local conditions and the needs of the group headcoach Angie and local instructor Emilio decided on their daily strategy. We always have a local surfcoach on our trips. Not only for showing us the best spots at the right time but also to help in the water. Emilio made sure everyone knew the dynamics of the surfspots, entered and left the water in safety, found their spot in the lineup, got loads of waves and had a great laugh. What a legend! Thanks for being part of TENERIFFE TAKE-OFF. That´s Emilio, the NOMB Surfcrew and campchef Lovely Linda.

Great surfteam on Tenerife, the NOMB Surfers and local surfguide and legend Emilio de Armas

Happy faces in and outside the water. Apart from surfing a lot the crew got up to quite some cool stuff. Beach yoga for example, to stretch and relaxed those worked muscles. We were lucky to count on sweet Noella, a great yoga instructor and a surfer herself. Noella focused on creating more strength in the core area, stretching the tired muscles in the neck and shoulder areas and also on the essential breathing. Great classes down at the beach, listening to the sound of the breaking waves. Even yoga novice Michi started to like this thing called yoga 😉

The surfcrew also got to explore a bit of the local culture of Tenerife. Surfguide Emilio took the crew out for dinner one night, to a typical restaurant. They are called Guachinches and can be found all over the island but mainly in the North. It´s a different type of restaurant where you are served local dishes and homemade wine. The food is delicious although not isn´t particular healthy (french fries mixed with fried eggs and chorizo sausages for example) but it was great night and the local food and wine restored the batteries of our surfcrew.

Part of the crew set off to explore Spain´s highest peak and the breathtaking view at the ´mar de nubes´ (ocean of clouds). That´s Lindis and Luzia casually posing in front of the Teide 😉

Unfortunately, shorty after this photo was taken, someone broke into our car and stole a couple of backpacks. An ugly setback, sadly something common to be found in pretty much any touristy spot worldwide. Luckily the stolen backpacks contained ´only´ beachstuff, (well, and Chris´s glasses) but no wallets or phones were robbed. However, the crew had to make their way to the local policestation to report the incident. Angie took over the cooking duties that night, a warm house and dinner ready were waiting for the crew upon return to the homebase. So proud that the spirits where kept high, what a crew of legends!!

As usual, the 7 days ran by way too quickly and after one last surfsession and an afternoon chilling on the beach TENERIFE TAKE-OFF was nearly over. One last tasty dinner, a few drinks and loads of laughter next to the fireplace. Check out the #Tripnotes photos on our Facebook page to find out even more about this fantastic trip (soon to be repeated for sure!!) to Tenerife!

Thanks to all the NOMB Surfers: A.K., Chris, Luzia, Michi and Miri for surfing with us!! Thanks to campchef Lindis for spoiling us and being the crazy woman she is! Thanks to local guide Emilio Slater for welcoming us and showing off with the best ever expressions, you deserve a book (´Luzia, this is a surfing class not a diving class, don´t go looking for fishes..´ Emilio to Luzia after a head first wipeout).

It´s been a great trip, we can´t wait for more and hope to sea you all soon on one of our upcoming trips.

Next stop: GALICIAN GALAXY (May 2019)

Great barrels on Fuerteventura to kick off the new year

Happy new year from the whole NOMB Surfteam!! We hope you started 2019 in style and got some great waves along the way.

Here on Fuerteventura the waves have been pumping. What a winter it has been so far. Clean groundswells of all sizes, Offshore winds. Epic. After the winter holiday chaos the island is now returning to it´s chilled out vibes. Loving this time of the year..

Like everyone else, we here at NOMB Surf have made some resolutions for the next year. And you know what? They all involve SURFING!! The whole team will be working extra hard for you to have the maximum NOMB Surf experience. We are dedicated to improve and evolve. This includes staff training, improved coaching structures, new trip destinations and an overall exciting new surf experience. Watch out for our new image clip, soon to be released!!

So what´s gonna happen at NOMB Surf in 2019?? There are some exciting news on the horizon.

Let´s start with the NOMB Surftrips, here is a quick overview of this year´s upcoming trips:

  • 7 days surfholiday TENERIFE TAKE-OFF (Jan 2019)
  • 14 days intensive surfcamp GALICIAN GALAXY (May 2019)
  • 7 days surfholiday GLITZY GALICIA (June 2019)
  • 14 days adventure surftrip SOON TO BE ANNOUNCED to somewhere in Africa (Sep 2019)
  • 7 days surfholiday ICONIC IRELAND (Nov 2019)

On our surfcoaching trips, as well as during our private surfcoachings of Fuerteventura, we guarantee an individual and professional coaching. The maximum number of participants on our surftrips is 6, making sure that everyone improves quickly. We always work with a local surfschool and have one of their experienced instructors in the water with us. That brings the student-instructor ratio down to max 3 surfers per instructor. Wouldn´t you want to be part of the great NOMB Surfcrew??

If we are not away running one of our fantastic surftrips we offer private surfcoachings on paradise island Fuerteventura, our homebase. So what exactly is private surfcoaching? It means it´s only you and your own surfcoach. Your coach is fully dedicated to making you learn and improve fast on a one to one basis. So what should quality surfcoaching look like?? Indivdual –  goal setting – feedback. Those are some of the keywords that you will come across when training with NOMB Surf. And watch out, quality surfcoaching is not only about commenting every one of your waves, it also included a lot of indirect coaching drills, essential theory and visual analysis. And you wanna know what? NOMB Surf offers all of the above, in English, German and Spanish. Choose the language that suits you most.

NOMB Surf sticks out in the national and international surfmarket, choosing quality and individuality over quantity and profit. If you want to be part of the NOMB Surfcrew, either on one of our cool surfcoaching trips or getting coached on Fuerteventura, get in touch with us. We are happy to tailor make just the right experience for you.

Meet the team: Emilio

Meet the team: Emilio

Hola!

My name is Emilio de Armas. I am a FCS licensed surf instructor and I am from the Canary Islands. To be more precise, I am from Tenerife. I have been surfing for more than 30 years and have been a fulltime surfcoach for the past 6 years.

I started surfing thanks to my brother and my father. The adventures, the search for new waves, the shared moments with friends and an endless amount of other things made me want to surf.

Today surfing is an essential part of my life and even more with being the founder & coach of IT´S ON PRIVATE SURF COACHING, a new philosophy y methodology of how to learn to surf and improve in this amazing sport.

I love what I am doing and passing on all my knowledge about surfing to whoever wants to learn and improve, I am stoked to help my clients reach their goals.

In January I will be your local surfguide on my beautiful island, looking forward to sharing waves with you.

Emilio
